With cultural treasures, artistic inheritance, historic towns and flower-filled meadows, Russia continues to be surrounded by mystique and it is a must see for visitors. Its now much more accessible to tourists.
In Moscow the main attraction of the city is Red Square with its onion domed Russian orthodox churches. On one side of it lies the Kremlin surrounded by a thick red fortress containing 20 towers. Ivan the Terribles throne is situated near the entrance and this is also the site were many Tsars were crowned.
St Petersburg, north west of Moscow, commonly known as the Venice of the north, is famous for its waterways, culture and elegant buildings. The city lies in the delta of the river Neva and covers 42 islands. The Winter Palace and the Palace Square are steeped in history and the State Hermitage Museum contains treasures of former Tsars.
South of St Petersburg lies Novgorod, with many interesting sites to see inside the Kremlin is the Cathedral of St. Sophia, the Millennium of Russia Monument and the Chamber of Facets. Just across from the Kremlin is Yaroslavs Court with medieval markets, churches and palace remains. You will also find the beautifully decorated Church of Our Saviour-at-llino.
Sochi is a resort town situated on the Black Sea. It has a warm subtropical climate, warm waters attracting local and international tourists. The resort complex of Dagomys is the main attraction here as well as beautiful gardens, waterfalls, mountains and stunning views.
The Volga River runs from Yaroslavl to Volgograd. Towns on the river include Kazan, an old Tatar city with several mosques as well as Lenins birthplace Ulyanovsk. Volgograd is best known for the battle fought here during WWII and is full of museums and monuments documenting this tragic event.
