Mini guide to Rottweil
RottweilIn the state of Baden Wurttemberg in southwest Germany, between the Black Forest and Swabian Alb is the oldest town, called Rottweil. It is a small town with a population of around 25,000. Rottweil is famous for its carnival call Fasnet. Established by the Romans as Arae Flaviae, it became a municipium. Traces of human settlement are found in this region since 2000 BC and it became a ducal and a royal court before 771. Rottweil became a Free Imperial City in 1268.
The city joined hands with the Swiss Confederation in 1463, and remained closely aligned for several centuries. However, Napoleon conquered this region in 1803, and Rottweil lost its status of free city and alliance with Swiss confederacy. The town still reflects the appearance of towns of the 16th century.
As a tourist, one should not miss to see “The Late-Romanesque” and “Gothic-era Münster Heiliges Kreuz” (Minster of the Holy Cross). This was built over a pre-existing church of the1270’s, and reflects a crucifix by Veit Stoss with Gothic Sculptures. Another Gothic Church is Kapellenkirche (1330-1340), with three decorated portal statues. The City Museum includes a mosaic with a legend of Orpheus. The Late-Gothic Town Hall of 1521 and the Church of St. Lawrence of the 16th century are must sees of the town of Rottweil.
