Although the Netherlands cities are somewhat compact, crowded and unsuitable for cars, theres plenty more to see outside of the urban areas and much of the the country is small enough to explore in a day by car, if you were in a hurry!
The Blijdorp Zoo, near Rotterdam, is very popular due to its many different animal species that live in imitation surroundings: a Gorilla island, Malayan 'forest rim', and a widely varied Asian area with many unique animals like bantengs and babirussa. The newly build Oceanium is a real sight. Here you can experience walking beneath the sea surrounded by tons of fish.
The countrys most visited city is undoubtedly Amsterdam with its famous concentric canals, narrow buildings, excellent museums, crazy red light district and laidback coffeeshops. It has a delightfully unhurried atmosphere, but gets crowded with tourist during the summer. Its less than an hours drive from Rotterdam.
Also nearby is, the Hague, the seat of the Royalty and government, including stately mansions, palatial embassies and prestigious art galleries. Haarlem is also worth visiting and displays all the grandeur of Amsterdam without the tourist fuss.
Delft is a tiny, over visited, but quaint town famous for its pottery. The Keukenhof, south of Haarlem, is the world's largest garden. It attracts a staggering 800,000 people during its eight-week season each year. Volendam and Marken are two picturesque fishing villages along the coast of the IJsselmeer, formerly called the Zuiderzee. If youre trying to keep the kids happy head for Madurodam, the worlds largest miniature world. Excursions run daily from Amsterdam and other centres.
