Car Hire in Roseau Cruise Ship Berth - Mini guide to Roseau Cruise Ship Berth
Roseau is the capital of the island of Dominica. The Roseau Cruise Ship Berth leads directly into the heart of Roseau and the old market square. The island’s colonial past is reflected in the style of architecture of the buildings surrounding this square being mainly French but with some English and Spanish influences. The old market itself, which was once was involved in the slave trade, is a wealth of colour on market days with numerous stalls offering tropical fruit and vegetables. Dominica is also known for some of the best straw products in the Caribbean, including the famous larouma reed baskets and Carib handicrafts. The Dominica museum is just across from the pier and although small, it provides an interesting overview of the history of the island.
The central district of Roseau is densely packed with little open space. However, unlike most Caribbean cities, it has large areas of green space in the form of the Government House gardens and the botanical gardens. The botanical gardens on the outskirts of Roseau are a relaxing place to visit. Established in 1891, the gardens also house an aviary with Sisserou parrots and the famous ‘crushed bus’, a victim of Hurricane David. The gardens were once ornately laid out, but Hurricane David destroyed much of the landscape. However, the gardens are still a pleasant outdoor area for cricket matches and other events.
Visitors to Roseau should try to include a trip into the interior of the island. An excursion to the Middleham falls will take you deep into the rainforest. The falls themselves are striking; a narrow stream drops about 200 feet from a gap in the cliffs. A shallow cave to the side of the falls provides a perfect vantage point from which to enjoy the setting which can be used for diving into the water below. Alternatively for those who want something more relaxing visit the Rainforest Shangri-La Resort which offers massages, mud scrubs, mud wraps, yoga and other treatments.
Hiring a car is the best and most economical way of seeing the island, it is cheaper than the taxis. Cars can be hired at the Roseau Cruise Ship Berth or there are a number of other car rental firms in Roseau. If you intend to go to some of the more inaccessible areas it is worth paying a bit extra for a 4x4 vehicle. You will need to purchase a licence that allows you to drive on the island for one month.
