Car Hire Romorantin - Mini guide to Romorantin
70kms south of Orleans, in the heart of the Loire valley, lies the sleepy town of Romorantin. Surrounded by lush marshes and woodland, and steeped in history, its a place where Leonardo da Vinci was asked to build a castle, but the project was never finished.
Musee de Sologne, situated in the old mills in the centre of Romorantin, presents a comprehensive account of the ecology and traditions of the area. Its also worth going to see the Grand Hotel du Lion, 69 rue Georges Clemenceau, which is housed in a splendid old manor house.
Romorantin is well known for its local cuisine and food markets. Those on a tight budget should try some of the local cafes and restaurants in the centre of town. If you want to splurge, head to the Hotel du Lion, where a meal will set you back in the region of F500.
Not too far from Romorantin is Salbris, which sits on the banks of the Sauldre just off the A10. The adjoining woods are good for walking and cycling, but in summer the town is a holiday centre for French schoolchildren and can be busy.
The best time to visit Romorantin is the last weekend in October for the Journees Gastronomiques, a major food festival when the streets, restaurants and stalls are alive with festivities. Delicious foods on offer include novel dishes centred on game, wild mushrooms, apples and pumpkins.
The nearest international airport is Tours Val de la Loire Airport, which is located only 10 minutes away from Tours city centre, where there is also a TGV station. From Orleans you can drive down the A1 to the Romorantin turn off.
