Getting to Rome
You can get to Rome from most major cities in the world, and its popular as a stopping off point en-route to Asia. The main airport is Leonardo da Vinci, also known as Fiumicino (west of the city). There are also many domestic connections. Ciampino (Southeast) is the other, smaller airport, handling mostly domestic and limited international flights from Europe and the Mediterranean. Shuttle buses and trains run into the city frequently.
From Termini (central train station) buses run to destinations throughout Italy, while local buses connect to smaller towns in Lazio. It is possible to catch non-stop buses to many European cities.
Italys train network is extensive, relatively cheap and fast (if you catch the right class of train). There are regular train connections to all the major cities in Italy and Europe from Termini station. Trains are comfortable, reliable and regular to all major destinations.
The main road connecting Rome to the north and south of Italy is the Autostrada del Sole, which connects with the ring road circling the city. It runs North towards Tuscany (Florence) and South to Naples and be beyond. Two main highways head west to the coast, one to Ostia and another to the airport. Eastwards a highway heads to Brindisi, launching point for ferries to Greece.
