At the heart of the Aveyron region lies the old capital of Rouergue, Rodez. Its geographical position, sitting between the dry plates of Causses and the wet hills of Sogala, makes it an interesting place to visit. The mountains of Aubrac and the forest of Palanges give this town a scenic panorama.
The old town of Rodez is dominated by the huge red sandstone Cathédrale Notre-Dame, which is situated on the place dArmes. This historic cathedral was begun in 1277 and evidence still remains of its earliest architectural delights.
Heading south youll find place Rozier in front of the Maison Cannoniale, whose courtyard is guarded by jutting turrets. From here medieval streets connect place de-Gaulle, place de la Préfecture and the attractive place du Bourg.
There is an abundance of eateries, one of the best being La Taverne, 23 rue de l'Embergue, which has local cuisine at reasonable prices. For gourmet cuisine, try the Gouts et Couleurs on 38 rue Bonald.
The region of Aveyron, with its rolling hills and majestic gorges, is an excellent place for rambling. There are towns and villages in every direction from Rodez, including the beautiful village of Conques, famous for its medieval artefacts.
The airport at Rodez (Aeroport Rodez-Marcillac) is located 12kms north of Rodez on route de Decazeville, Salles la Source, Aveyron, Midi-Pyrines. It is served by daily flights from London, Paris and Lyon. By car, you can take the A75 from Paris to Severac and the N88 on to Rodez.
