Car Hire in Rhodes - Getting to Rhodes
The Dodecanese islands are one of the furthest from Athens, making them more difficult to get to. For this reason they are quieter, less touristy and free of the ferry-hordes.
By far the most convenient and quickest way to get to Rhodes is by air. Rhodes International Airport is located in Paradisi, about 16km from the City of Rhodes. There are regular flights to Rhodes from many European cities as well as locally from Athens, Thesaloniki, Iraklio and Mykono. Olympic Airways offers an extensive service to the island. There are also numerous charter flights to Rhodes, especially during the summer season, and these are often the cheapest option. From Rhodes you can also fly to Iraklio and Hania on Crete, Thessalonika, and in summer to Mykonos and Santorini (Thira) in the Cyclades. There are coach and taxi services available from the airport to the city.
The only other option to Rhodes is by ferry. The journey is very long though with the shortest trip from the mainland ferry hub of Piraeus to Rhodes taking about 28 hours. Departure times in both directions tend to be geared to an early-morning arrival, meaning onward island-hops can involve some antisocial hours. Long haul boats from Piraeus to Cyprus and Israel also stop at Rhodes. If you happen to be coming from Turkey you can catch Marmaris-Rhodes and Bodrum-Kos ferries.
