Rheine is a town of great culture and this is very much reflected in the pursuits you can enjoy during your stay. It is advisable to hire a car here for your travel convenience to explore many places in and around this town. There is so much in this town and you will not want to miss a thing.

There are many historically significant buildings in Rheine and many of them can be seen on three different walking trails called the ‘Cultural Route’, ‘The Salt Route’ and ‘The Nature Trail.’ All are professionally led and enquiries about these can be made at the Tourism Office locatable on any good map of the town. Particular highlights include the Monastery and Castle Bentlage. This was created in 1645 and is now used as a museum with luxury items found in the east wing where, historically, people would have stayed in the monastery part of the building. The pride of this exhibition is two reliquaries (small, box-like shrines that are intricately detailed with religious carvings covering the surface) that people come from miles around to see.

On the Salt Route, so called because the area was used for salt extraction since approximately 1022, is the building called Saline God’s Gift which, once used in the industry, is now surrounded by gardens and is under the protection of the European Heritage Garden Network making a quiet location for those wanting some peace and relaxation.

Close to this is another site called NaturZoo Rheine. In 2006 the establishment announced they housed over a hundred thousand different species of wildlife including the local white storks and a large collection of monkeys. It should be noted that the Zoo tries not to be a ‘conventional’ zoo and that it attempts to create a ‘green’ approach to the wildlife it keeps and the way it sustains its business. It is the perfect attraction for those of us who are trying to do their bit for the planet and animal welfare.

With a variety of churches, sports events and Europe’s largest children’s flea market amongst many other attractions, the holiday-maker really is spoilt for choice in Rheine.
