Called ‘Schottenkirche’ in the native tongue; it is a Romanesque basilica with a direct connection to the Irish Benedictines monks, from which it derives its name. Within close proximity stands a medieval city gate named the Jakobstor which is a curious but enjoyable structure. St. Emmeram’s Abbey, now with its name changed to Schloss Thurn und Taxis, stands as a huge castle owned by the noble family Thurn and Taxis. This is certainly worth an excursion to see, with its commanding battlements and heavily detailed exteriors.

Additionally, worth a visit are the public amenity buildings, such as the library, picture gallery and the institute for making stained glass – please check ahead as opening times vary seasonally. Finally the town has a botanical garden; with all these places of interest there are so many activities in Regensburg that you may find a hire car particularly useful to provide the flexibility to see all places at your convenience.
