Car Hire Redditch - Mini guide to Redditch
Located on the scenic Arrow River in the Worcestershire countryside, Redditch is a unique blend of old and new. Old, because it has a history that dates back to the 12th century with a Cistercian monastery, and new because it now has all the modern conveniences of the thriving town it has become.
The Forge Mill, on the River Arrow, is the last surviving example of the many water-driven needle-scouring mills that were once set up in the area. Built in 1730, the mill was still in use up to 1958. It was later turned into a museum and is today a major tourist attraction.
The real "town centre" of Redditch is around Church Green. In 1855, the chapel on the green was replaced by the present day St Stephen's Church.
The Kingfisher Shopping Centre is located nearby, with many fine shops to browse through. Nightlife is never boring here as there are a wide variety of restaurants, pubs and nightclubs to choose from. There are a number of wide-open spaces, parks and woodlands in the area, which are the ideal setting for enjoying the outdoors.
A short drive from Redditch is the old Roman town of Alcester (pronounced locally as "Alster"). This quaint market town has a wealth of fascinating architecture and is a lovely place to stroll around and soak up the atmosphere.
Redditchs close proximity to Birmingham ensures that it is well served by trains and buses. There are hourly trains from Redditch Station, usually via Birmingham, to and from Londons Paddington or Euston Stations (duration approx. 4 hours). Connections can also be made to Birminghams International Airport. Redditch is easily accessible by car, via highways M40 and M42 to the south, and the A435 from Birmingham.
