Ragusa is a south Italian city and the capital of Ragusa Province of Sicily Island. It has about 70,000 inhabitants and is based on a wide limestone hill found between two deep valleys, Cava Santa Domenica and Cava San Leonardo.
It was in the year 1693 that Ragusa was hit by a huge earthquake that killed about 5,000 people and led to the rebuilding of the city wherein the district of Ragusa was divided into two cities; High Ragusa and Low Ragusa. These two cities remained separated till 1926 where they were fused into one because of a fascist gerarca. However these two halves are separated by a ravine of four bridges, Valle dei Ponti.
There are many places to see and visit when in Ragusa. The Upper town boasts of the Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista which was first located in the west part of ancient Ragusa. Its ornate Boraque interior has a Latin cross plan with two aisles and nave separated by three gold embellished colonnades. Each column has charts of Bible verses. Its dome was built in 1783 and covered with copper sheets in the 20th century.
Also make a visit to the Hyblean Archaeological Museum where you find six sections solely on Prehistoric to Late Roman findings. The Lower Ragusa boasts of Baroque architecture including stunning churches and palaces. An example is the Cathedral of San Giorgio that was built in 1748 to substitute the temple that was destroyed in the 1693 earthquake.
It has façade of 250 steps, massive ornate columns, decorated portals and statues of saints. The church Santa Maria delle Scale connects the Upper Ragusa with the Lower Ragusa. This is an interesting church as after the 1693 earthquake, half the church was built in Baroque style while the surviving half remained in the original Gothic style.
