New Zealands south Island is best enjoyed by car, its covered in spectacular mountain scenery and beautiful forest. Queenstown is no exception, with Fjordland, and the rest of Otagos attractions within a few hours drive.
A road winds its way along the edge of Lake Wakitipu, in both directions and the views of the mountains surrounding the lake are fantastic.
Not far from Queenstown is the historic museum town of Arrowtown. Formerly a gold mining town, its interesting past can be enjoyed by leisurely strolling the small high street, browsing the old shops and occasional museum or visit the curious Chinese settlement.
Wanaka is an artists community located on a lake, several hours drive from Queenstown. It has a laid back atmosphere and is popular in the summer.
Fiordland National Park, is one of the worlds most remarkable landscapes and justifiable part of UNESCOs list of World Heritage site. Steep valleys and towering rock fascias have been carved out of the convoluted coastline by glacial action and the parks centrepiece is the breathtaking Milford Sound. It draws the crowds, but the three-hour drive there, through the forests of the Hollyford Valley and past the Lake at Te Anau is unbeatable. In the park are two of New Zealands most popular hiking trails, the Milford track and Routeburn track (Booking ahead essential).
During winter, the many ski resorts in the area open up, while farms and wilderness areas offer all sorts of adventure activities during the summer.
