Five hundred year old San Juan is the capital of Puerto Rico, and it combines a modern metropolis with an old Spanish colonial town and white Caribbean beaches. As a center for obtaining just about anything you could want, the city makes an excellent base for exploring the island. It also enjoys a stunning location on a large natural harbour and has interesting fortifications at the entrance, as well as an old town.
Ponce, the second largest city in Puerto Rico, is located on a small island just off the southern coast of the main island. The center of the city dates from the 17th century and has been so meticulously maintained that is has been named a national treasure.
For entertainment and recreation, San Juan offers all of the amenities of a modern city. Clustered around the Old Spanish section are numerous bars, hotels, Latin-discos and casinos. And if such activity isn’t to your liking, the city is right on a beautiful beach.
Not far by auto from San Juan or Ponce are the El Yunque National Forest and the Rio Camuy Cave Park. El Yunque is the only tropical forest in the US national park system and offers breathtaking views if you have the energy to hike to the top of the 1065m peak. Rio Camuy Cave Park has caves large enough to contain skyscrapers and contains numerous opportunities for caving and exploring underground rivers.
San Juan International Airport offers direct flights to most major American cities as well as London and Frankfurt. From San Juan you can also fly all over the Caribbean.
