Car Hire Prato - Mini guide to Prato

Prato is the capital city of Plato Province of Tuscany, Italy. This city was a target for immigration in the 1950s from southern Italy and other nationalities. In fact, a large Chinese community also settled here in the late 1980s. Today Prato has more than 180,000 inhabitants making it Tuscany’s second largest city and the third largest of Central Italy.

Prato’s economy has always relied more on the textile industry. There is proof of this in the Datini archives of early medieval documents that existed between 1363 and 1410. Prato is today famous for its slow food movement with local specialties like cantucci being sold by local specialty bakers.

Prato is famous for its museums and cultural monuments like the Filippo Lippi frescoes of the Cathedral of Santo Stefano which has an external pulpit of Donatello. The Centro per l’arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci is a museum and education center of Prato that is concerned with contemporary arts.

The Santa Maria delle Carceri is a Greek cross plan that was inspired by Brunelleschi’s Pazzi Chapel. Its interior is run by Luca Della Robbia the author of four tondos of the four Evangelists of the cupola. The San Francesco of Prato houses a notable funerary monument of Gemriniano Inghirami and Niccolo Gerini’s frescos.

The Palazzo Pretario of Prato is a monument that was built with red bricks in the 13th century with white stones of the late-Gothic era. Its external staircase and watch were added in the 16th century. Another notable monument of Prato is the Palazzo Datini built for Francesco Datini, the famous merchant. You can find traces of a mosaic pavement in San Fabiano of Prato that has been around since 1082.

Prato’s Textile Museum has a collection of local and foreign clothes and textiles from all over the world like Europe, India, America and China. The Luigi Pecci Museum of Contemporary Art is situated in a modern architectonical complex that houses the most remarkable collections of contemporary art in Italy.
