Car Hire in Porto - Getting to Porto
Porto (Oporto) is located in the north of Portugal on the Atlantic coastline. It has good road connections with the capital and Spain to the north, and is also regularly serviced by rail. Flights arrive at the Aeroporto Francisco de Sá Carneiro, 14kms north of the city.
The Portuguese airline, TAP, has daily connections from Lisbon as well as international arrivals. AeroBus numbers 56 and 87 run to Porto's main drag, Avenida dos Aliados, every half-hour between 07:00 and 19:30. Taxis are the most convenient way to get from the airport into the centre.
Driving from Lisbon, take the A1 motorway all the way to Porto. The journey is a shade over 300kms and takes around three hours. From Madrid, take the A6 (Madrid-Corunna) motorway, exiting on to the A52 heading for Vigo to the west. Head south on the E1 before Vigo, leading on to the A3 motorway all the way to Porto. The total distance is 714kms and should take about six hours by car.
The Estação de Campanhã train station is east of the town centre but connected to São Bento by rail. It serves the south, including Lisbon, as well as international routes. Five trains arrive per day from Lisbon; the trip takes 4 hours, 30 minutes, and costs 13.75 one way. One train per day arrives from Paris; the trip takes 27 hours and costs 120 one way.
There are at least five daily bus departures from Lisbon with Rodoviária Nacional. The trip takes five hours and costs 12.50 one way, and buses terminate at the bus station on rua Alexandre Herculano. There are also 10 buses per day from Coimbra; the trip takes 1 hour, 30 minutes, and costs 8 one way.
