Car Hire in Portland - Getting to Portland
Portland International Airport is located next to the Columbia River, eight kilometres and 20 minutes north of Portland central. Sixteen passenger airlines service the airport, making Portland easily accessible. Transport into the city centre is provided by Amtrak rail services, bus or the Airport Max light rail service, which leaves from the airport every 15 minutes, with the journey to the city centre taking approximately 40 minutes.
Driving to Portland is also made easy by the high quality of the American roads and the choice of several different routes into the city. From Idaho in the east, I-84 is the major route into Portland; while from Washington I-5 comes through the city, and then continues on to California. Other, more scenic routes move along less major highways, through numerous small towns that offer convenient opportunities for gas, food or stopovers.
Train travel in the US is efficient and well-priced, and offers a relaxing alternative to less comfortable bus journeys. From Portland, Amtrak trains run to the bordering states on all sides and beyond, often through beautiful scenery.
Greyhound buses also offer daily service from Portland to most large towns in the surrounding region, with connections to destinations all over the US.
