Portalegre
Located near to the border with Spain and surrounded by the São Mamede hills, Portalegre was a strategically important town during the Middle Ages. History buffs will find plenty attractions of historical interest in Portalegre, including a 13th century castle; the Convents of Saint Claire and St Francis, both dating back to medieval times; and a 17th century baroque cathedral.
Between 1737 and 1798 the Portalegre cathedral underwent baroque styled modifications, which can best be seen in the construction’s façade. The cathedral houses a remarkable collection of Mannerist painting art created by several 16th and 17th century Portuguese masters.
Constructed on the highest point of the town is Portalegre Castle. Originally this defensive building contained a double wall and inner courtyard along with seven gates and 12 towers. Today the so called devesa gateways, Crato and Alegrete, are all that remains of the castle walls. From the castle visitors have a pretty view over the town.
Portalegre’s surrounding area can easily be explored by private hire car. The locals from the historic, picturesque nearby villages like Marvão and Monsaraz are laid-back and friendly, and used to foreign visitors.
