Porta WestfalicaEstablished in 1973, Porta Westfalica is located along the bank of the Weser River in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The city is near the Porta Westfalica Gorge within the Minden Lubbecke district, and was formed from several villages amongst the gorge. The small villages that make up Porta Westfalica include Hausberg, Lohfeld, Barkhausen, Neesen, Lerbeck, Nammen, Wulpke, Kleinenbremen, Eisbergen, Veltheim, Costedt, Holzhausen, Holtrup, Mollbergen, and Vennebeck. It is relatively small covering 105 square kilometres, and has a population that is slightly less than 40,000.
The landscape around Porta Westfalica is absolutely incredible. If a tourist chooses to visit the city for no other reason than to enjoy the remarkable views, he or she will not be disappointed. Like many small German towns, it is quaint and charming. The surrounding Weihengebirge Mountains and Weserbergland are spectacular.
The Kaiser-Wilhelm Monument is a popular tourist attraction in Porta Westfalica. As a matter of fact, it is regarded as the top attraction in the town. The monument was started in 1892 and is built on the top of a hill in the city and can be seen from many miles away. Wilhelm I was the first emperor in all of Germany and the monument is a large display of patriotism. The monument is eighty-eight meters high and is the second highest in all of Germany. Visiting the monument is on every tourist’s list when they visit Porta Westfalica. Upon arrival in the town, it is not difficult to notice due to its extreme size.
