Car Hire Pordenone - Mini guide to Pordenone
Pordenone is the capital of the Province of Pordenone that is located in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Italy. This territory was carved from the Province of Udine in the year 1968 and carries an area of 2,273 km sq. The total population in this province as of 2001 was 286,198 in the 51 communes found here.
The name Pordenone stems from the Latin name ‘Portus Naonis’ which is the port of river Noncello. This province was created as a river port on the Noncello in the High Middle Ages by its Latin name. At this time, there were agricultural settlements and villas found here from the Roman age.
It was only in the 14th century that Pordenone grew with flourishing river trades to be declared a city in 1314. The Republic of Venice acquired Pordenone in 1514 wherein a new port was built with the improvement of its manufacturers.
There are many places worth visiting in Pordenone like the Cathedral of St. Mark that was built in 1363 in Romanesque-Gothic style. It houses San Rocco’s famous fresco while its altarpiece is the work of the native Renaissance painter, Giovanni Antonio de’Sacchis.
Pordenone has been the host to Le Giornate del Cinema Muto, the famous festival of silent films since 1981. The most recent festival was held here between October 6th to 13th 2007. Besides this you find the best concerts, sporting events and thrilling events organized here. And if you are a fan of Korn, you have to make a visit to Palasport Pordenone where there is a live concert from Korn scheduled for 22/02/2008 where tickets are available online.
