Ponte de Sor is a relatively small municipality of Portugal in the District of Portalegre, with under eighteen thousand inhabitants and only 7 parishes. The 3rd military road to Lisbon from Merida was the site of the first Roman Bridge which gave this municipality its name (Ponte de meaning Bridge of, and Sor being the river that it spans). Ponte de Sor was originally the property of the Templars until the Order of St. Benedict seized it from them. Ponte de Sor claimed the title of city in 1985. The Roman bridge is no longer a part of the landscape, however, King Joao VI had another bridge built that still stands today in 1822.

Bras convent, the chapel is still present. After the peninsular wars, the dwelling was a hostel, and Jose rented a room there while he attended school. Jose collected art, especially depictions of Christ, and as his collection grew, he rented more rooms to store his art. Eventually he was the sole inhabitant. When he sold his collection to Portalegre, it was on the condition that they also buy the house, restore it, and make it into a museum. After Jose Regio died in 1969, Portalegre made good on its promise, and the museum opened to the public in 1971.
