Situated close to France’s border with Switzerland, Pontarlier is the country’s second highest town and a destination often touted as the economic capital of the Franche-Comté region. Visitors make use of the many sporting activities it offers, especially in wintertime when it is the perfect base from which to access a variety of ski resorts.
History enthusiasts might be interested to know that during the 19th century, Pontarlier was known as the capital of absinthe. Production of the infamous and highly intoxicating green spirit was a major local industry in the town until it was made illegal in 1915. Today the same distillery responsible for absinthe produces a beverage known as ‘Anis of Pontarlier’.
Among the attractions on offer for sightseeing enthusiasts is the Chateau de Joux, a grand old castle located three miles out from the town centre and easily reachable by hire car. The castle houses a museum, the theme of which is arms and there are pieces dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Come summertime every year, the castle is the setting for a popular festival known as the ‘Festival des nuits de Joux’.
During the winter season, skiers and snowboarders flock to the Métabief Mont d'Or resort, located at the base of the Mont d'Or mountain to take advantage of the excellent on-piste action. There are six small villages that comprise the resort and visitors can find accommodation and dining venues at all of them.
