Car Hire Ponta Delgada Joao Paulo II Airport - Mini guide to Ponta Delgada Joao Paulo II Airport
Located near the city of Ponta Delgada, the most populous urban centre on San Miguel Island, Joao Paulo II Airport is the busiest airport in the Azores Autonomous Region. Located on the archipelago's largest island, it is less than three kilometres from downtown Ponta Delgada. Regular air services link it to all the islands of the archipelago, with the main airports in the mainland (Lisbon and Oporto), Funchal, Frankfurt and some cities in the USA and Canada.
The airport has only one terminal that caters for all domestic, international and intercontinental flights. Once inside the terminal, you can find a bank, bureau de change, post office and an ATM. A tourist information counter is also provided.
While there are no actual restaurants inside the terminal, it does have a good selection of delicatessens and snack bars. Both duty-free and regular shopping outlets are available. Products on offer include local handicrafts, travel goods, clothing, mobile phones, and there is a newsagency with a wide selection of papers. Three travel agencies have outlets in the airport to aid with any further travel plans.
Conference facilities are available at the airport, with facilities including both video and television screens. Conference facilities must be booked in advance. Contact the airport director for further information on business facilities (+351(0) 296 205 400). A VIP lounge is also provided, equipped with standard telecommunication facilities.
As part of the assistance provided to carriers, SATA (Air Azores) supplies qualified staff to help with luggage claiming for disabled and elderly passengers as well as unaccompanied minors. While porter service is not available in the terminal, there are free luggage trolleys for inbound and outbound passengers.
An information service is provided in the public hall of the terminal building. Flight information can be obtained in the terminal by checking the various flight information boards and at the ANA, SA and SATA (Air Azores) counters.
