Located in Paris’ western suburbs, 15 miles from the city centre, Poissy is a commune with a relatively low-key reputation. Famous historically for being the site of a conference between the Catholics and Huguenots in the mid-16th century, Poissy’s only other claim to fame is the local liquor known as ‘Noyau de Poissy’, which has been made from apricot stones at the Noyau distillery since the 18th century.
The commune, which can be reached easily by car from central Paris, is home to a few interesting sights including the 12th century Notre-Dame collegiate church on rue de l'Eglise. This is one of the few examples of architecture in the region to illustrate the crossover from the Roman to Gothic style. The church contains some notable statues, among which are one of Isabelle of France by Philippe le Bel and one of Saint Louis as a teenager by Félix Févola. The statue of Saint Louis is especially appropriate in light of the fact that he was baptised in the church in 1214.
Younger visitors will find the Toy Museum of interest with its collection of games and objects of play dating from 1850 to 1950. The museum has been open since 1976 and is housed in the gatehouse of the 14th century royal priory. Guided tours are available which take in the museum as well as the church and other attractions such as the Savoye Villa and Noyau distillery.
Poissy is an accessible destination, having its own railway station which is served by the Paris RER line A and the Transilien Paris – Saint-Lazare suburban line. Road routes from downtown Paris are quick and hassle-free, making life easy for visitors who choose to hire cars.
