Just minutes from Pittsburgh city centre on Route 837 is Sandcastle Water Park, providing fantastic summer fun. Idlewild Park, located 80kms east of Pittsburgh in the exquisite setting of the Laurel Mountains forest area, is the oldest amusement park in the US. Entertainment includes several rides, Storybook Forest and Raccoon Lagoon.
The Laurel Mountains themselves offer opportunities for a range of outdoor pursuits, including white-water rafting, hiking, biking and fishing. Fort Necessity Battlefield, where George Washington had his first major test during the French and Indian War in 1754, is also located in the area.
A short drive from the city is Conemaugh River Lake, a rich historical area that features the remains of the Pennsylvania Mainland Canal and turn-of-the-century railroads. Seven thousand acres of land around the lake are reserved for wildlife management and hunting.
In the hills around Pittsburgh are a number of attractions which can easily be reached by car. Clayton is the historical home of a notable industrialist, Henry Clay Frick. It dates back to the Victorian period and has been impeccably preserved since 1900. On the grounds is the Frick Art and Historical Center, surrounded by neatly kept gardens where you can enjoy afternoon tea and chamber music.
Frank Lloyd Wright, a prominent early 20th century architect, designed two architectural masterpieces in the area. Fallingwater, from 1936, is a fascinating house that appears to be carved of the hillside, but is separate from it. Its name comes from a waterfall that cascades down the exterior of the house. A 30-minute drive away is Kentuck Knob, another Lloyd Wright creation, with superb decorative arts, furniture and outdoor sculptures that complement the design of the house.
The beautiful Allegheny Forest, which covers a colossal land area, provides recreation opportunities for camping, fishing, hunting, swimming, boating, cross-country skiing and mountain biking. It is home to Kinzua Dam and Allegheny Reservoir, which are surrounded by rustic lakeshore camping sites, scenic trails and abundant wildlife.
