Getting to Pisa
Pisa is located in the Tuscany region of northwestern Italy on the Mediterranean Sea. Tuscany's main international airport, Galileo Galilei is just three kilometres south of Pisa. It receives traffic from most major cities throughout the world.
There is a train station directly outside the terminal and trains go all day to Pisas central station for less than 1, and take just five minutes. This is in sharp contrast to the regular taxi fare of 8.
By car from the north, take the A12 motorway; alternatively, the SS1 basically runs parallel with the A12 along the coast. From the direction of Rome in the south, take the A1 autostrada north to Florence and change to the A11, Florence-Pisa autostrada west. From Lucca, take the SS12 or S12r.
There are more than 20 trains daily to Pisa from Rome, taking about three hours and there are 35 trains a day from Florence, taking an hour and a half. Three to four trains an hour run from Livorno, taking only 15 minutes; while trains run approximately every hour from Siena, taking two hours. All trains roll into Pisa Centrale station. From here, bus numbers 1, 3 or 11 will take you to Piazza del Duomo.
The bus station is located at Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, just north of the main train station. Buses arrive here hourly from Florence; the journey takes 2 hours, 30 minutes due to the connection with Lucca. From Lucca to Pisa, buses travel hourly, taking 20 to 30 minutes. Via Nino Bixio has a route from Volterra with 10 buses daily connecting through Pontenedra; the trip takes 2 hours, 30 minutes.
