Cheap Car Rental Pisa - Exploring Pisa
You dont have to drive far to find something else that will attract you in the Tuscany region. However, due to the number of sites around Pisa and the close proximity of major motorways, hiring a car is the best option for seeing everything.
Lucca is a perfect Renaissance city, and the old city here is completely enclosed by 16th century ramparts. The focal point is the Duomo, containing a crucifix said to have been carved by Nicodemus. The National Gallery contains important works by painters such as Bronzino, Pontormo, and Tintoretto; while the Guinigi Museum houses a collection of Tuscan painting and sculpture.
Farther inland on the A11 motorway and within an hour of Pisa is one of the most enchanting cities in the world, Florence. Most sights here lie north of the River Arno, including: the famed Uffizi Gallery, the Duomo, Giotto's tower, and the Baptistery with its magnificent bronze doors.
The Bargello Museum with its stunning sculptures and the statue-adorned Church of Orsanmichele are not to be missed. A visit to the Accademia Gallery (containing Michelangelo's statue, David) is also a must. There are some wonderful little shops selling prints and souvenirs on the medieval Ponte Vecchio.
If you tire of sightseeing and art, lying along the coast to the west of Pisa is the Tenuta di San Rossore public park system. This area is Tuscany's most precious protected wildlife area, surrounded by several beaches and some boggy wetlands, with populations of wild deer, boars and aquatic birds. It is not open to the general public often, but is worth seeing when it is.
The city of Livorno (formerly known as Leghorn in English) is one of Italys largest ports and well known for its seafood. There is a distinct lack of art in this city, but the plethora of canals lends it a feeling of calm and gives it a touch of Venice.
