Car Hire Pirmasens
Mini guide to Pirmasens
PirmasensWith a population of approximately 50,000 people, Pirmasens is a very imaginatively rebuilt city and it was, at one point in time, the centre of the German shoe industry. It also acts as the urban hub of south-western region of Palatinate.
The city is situated in the Pfälzer Wald and was established by Count Ludwig IX who selected this region for his residential purposes and a military garrison. Ludwig was a very strict ruler in his time, and used to march his troops frequently on the parade ground. He was seen as one of the most enlightened rulers and is remembered fondly by the public.
The shoe industry indirectly owes its allegiance to Ludwig. When he died, his army was disbanded, and the soldiers turned to making shoes using the leather parts of their uniform. In a desperate attempt to make money, these shoes were then sold by their wives to the public. This was the beginning of world famous brand names such as Schlabbe. Remnants of Pirmasens’ magnificent shoe industry can be seen even today. This is exemplified by the wonderful Shoe Museum, located in the Old Town Hall in the pedestrian zone. It is best to walk around the city to look at all the sights, and don’t forget to buy a pair of Schlabbe for yourself and your family!
