Car Hire Palencia - Mini guide to Palencia
PalenciaPalencia is the capital city of the province of the same name, and is located in the Castile–Leon community. Here you will find plenty of attractions and activities to keep you occupied during your vacation. This city is located on two sides of the Carrion River and there is a historic Roman Bridge to cross from the left bank to the right bank. It is thought that the original inhabitants of Palencia settled on the right hand side, but moved over to the left because of frequent flooding, making the left bank the older of the two. The Roman Bridge was later replaced by a large three arched medieval one.
The old 10 meter high city walls can still be seen with the remnants of the 17th century promenades. A dramatic Cathedral in gothic style towers over a crypt. This building was completed in 1504, but was started in 1321. Other famous sights include the 13th century San Miguel church and the Benedictine Monastery. Make sure you don’t leave Palencia without visiting the Museum of Architecture and the Art Museum.
One of the most popular icons in Palencia is the Statue of Jesus Christ perched on the mountain top. It is the second largest one in the world, after the famous one in Brazil. Many other grand structure may take your fancy when you are exploring, but don’t forget to take some time to relax with a traditional Spanish drink and a meal at one of the restaurants in the city centre.
