Paderborn is a quaint university city in northwestern Germany, in the state of North Rhine Westphalia. Like many German cities, Paderborn owes its existence and fame to water – namely spring water. The Pader, which is only four kilometres long and the shortest river in Germany, springs up under the cathedral, with a total of 200 separate springs! The city is steeped in history and in the city centre alone you will find 20 historic buildings to explore.

Of the many historic buildings the city boasts, the Rathaus, town hall, is probably most impressive. Built in 1613, the building’s three-tiered gable façade is an excellent example of the Weser Renaissance period. The Kaiserpfalz, where in 777 Karl the Great founded Paderborn, and the ruins of the old walls that originally surrounded the city can also be seen. In the last week of July, Paderborn celebrates the Libori Festival. The city is beautifully decorated and lots of food and shopping stalls are set up – fun for everyone!

Home to the Nixdorf computer company, Paderborn boasts the supposedly largest computer museum in the world, the Heinz Nixdorf Museum Forum. The museum is located just outside the city, near the Padersee, a favourite retreat for the locals and a wonderful place to enjoy the water and nature. It is easy to reach from practically anywhere in the city -- just follow the Pader River down stream.

There is a small commuter airport, Paderborn-Lippstadt International Airport, just outside the city. With no rail link to the airport, car or bus are the only options to travel to the airport. The airport is served by Lufthansa and Eurowings, a European regional airline. Paderborn is easy to reach by car as it is located close to the main road network going north south and east west, the A33 and A44. Paderborn is within easy driving distance from Dortmund (87kms), Kassel (80kms), and Bielefeld (55kms).
