Ostia is a place that is located in the City of Rome, the capital of Italy. It is one of the larger neighborhoods in Rome and faces the beautiful Tyrrhenian Sea. The city is often confused with Ostia Antica which is an Archaeological site that is situated nearby which was an ancient port during Roman Empire.
Lido means Beach in Italian language; the place was named after the beautiful beach at its vicinity. When Rome was re-planned to be urbanized a road was built from the seaside to the Ostia neighborhood. Slowly Ostia became a Beach Resort in the Italian Capital.
Once it became a full fledged beach resort, Ostia was connected with proper Rail and Road facilities. The town was reorganized in to a new and better Fascist Architecture and the costal side was divided in to villas which the Romans used as second houses.
However this Fascist architecture was not long enjoyed by Ostia as the Second World War approached and the city was under constant siege. The neighborhood started back its urbanization in the late 1950’s and the early 1960’s and some popular buildings were built in this period.
Some of the important places that need mention are the Palace Square and Headquarters of the 13th century hall or the Administrative hall as it is called these days. It was in the late 1960’s that Ostia became a Full fledged resort and holiday site.
Ostia then became a part of the Commune of Rome. The isolated beaches give tourists a time to relax and it was in one of these beaches Italian Poet and intellectual “Pasolini” was assassinated in 1975.
The population of Ostia is about 86,000.One of the 5 railway station in Ostia was named after Christopher Columbus. The ideal time to visit is the summer from April to June when the temperature is mild. During winter the temperature drops down to about 3° Celsius.
