Mini guide to Östersund
Östersund is located in the centre of Sweden on the shores of Lake Storsjön and is one of the main winter sports towns in the country. Wonderful scenery and wild nature, with vast forests and majestic mountains, surround the charming town.
Yachting, golf, orienteering, canoeing, climbing and skydiving are some of the activities available here; additionally, when the lake freezes over in winter, it is possible to walk and ski across it. Östersund also hosts annual events such as the much revered biathlon, which is a cross-country and Alpine skiing championship.
The pedestrian-only Prästgatan, and adjoining quarter, is the main thoroughfare and gastronomical heartbeat of the town, full of exciting cafés, pubs and restaurants. Not far away is the unique Jamtli History Land Museum with live animals depicting country life of times gone by. Alternatively, Bathhouse Park is a wonderful spot for relaxing.
Every July, hordes of exhilarated visitors gather to take part in the Storsjöyran Music Festival, a street festival culminating in three days of intensive partying with music by both Swedish and internationally famous artists. Östersund is also known as Swedens most popular dance town and there is a plethora of dance venues and discotheques.
Having your own transport gives you the freedom to explore the stunning Jämtland region, where youll find unlimited access to the great outdoors. Swedens largest skiing resort, Åreskutan, is only an hour away. Even closer is Östberget, which is on Frösön Island and boasts fast downhill skiing.
Östersund is well serviced by the E14 and 45 highways, and there are six trains daily from Stockholm, taking roughly five hours. SAS flies between Stockholm and Östersund/Frösön Airport several times a day. The airport is 10km from the centre of town and has regular bus and taxi service.
