Mini guide to Oranienburg
OranienburgNestled in a quiet part of the Brandenburg region in Germany is the town of Oranienburg. Geographically speaking, Oranienburg is located on the banks of the river Halel, and is 35 kilometres north of the centre of Berlin.
Oranienburg was initially known as Bötzow, and the township was founded in the 12th century. It has a great history and local folklore goes on to say that there was a castle ordered to be built there by Albert the Bear, with traders and craftsmen from all around settling here.
In the year 1646 Friedrich Wilhelm I of Brandenburg wedded Louise Henriette of Oranien-Nassau, and she was so mesmerized by the town of Bötzow that her partner presented the entire region to her as a gift. The princess then ordered the construction of a new castle, which was to incorporate the Dutch style. The castle was named Oranienburg; hence the entire town drew its name from the great historical monument, as early as the year 1653.
Oranienburg has a rich historical and cultural background and is an ideal place to visit if one wants to experience German culture and history at its best. Be sure to try the local cuisine and beer if you want to truly experience Germany.
