Jutting out into the Arabian sea, at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, The Sultanate Oman is known for its friendly people, magnificent architecture and stunning landscapes, making it a surprising, oft-overlooked, tourist destination adjacent to the UAE.
Muscat, Oman's capital, is charming and traditional, with sights such as the old port area, the Sultan's main palace, old city walls and magnificent forts of Mutrah, Jalali and Mirani. Mutrah Fort overlooks the city, while Jalali and Mirani forts protect the harbor entrance. Other attractions in the city are the aquarium, the Oman Museum, the National Museum, and the Sultan's Armed Forces Museum, located in the Bait al-Falaj fort. For a stunning view of the city, climb the restored Mutrah watchtower.
Not surprisingly, most of the country’s main towns and attractions are spread along its picturesque coastline. In the south, Salalah is the base from which to explore the ruins of Al-Balid, site of the ancient city of Zafar, the beaches of Mughsail, and Job’s Tomb, while Nizwa boasts a 17th century fort built by the renowned Sultan bin Saif. Centrally located, the popular town of Sur delights tourists with its great beaches, massive forts, excellent Marine Museum and a dhow shipyard where traditional fishing vessels are built.
Take your time exploring the northern Batinah Coast, soaking up the sights of Barka - with its fort and a restored house - and Sohar, home of Sinbad the sailor - yet another impressive fort. Inland is another magnificent fort, Nakhal Fort, situated near a picturesque oasis. Further afield lies Rustaq, site of Oman’s former capital.
A change from the usual Oman scenery is the wild Musandam Peninsula, separated from the rest of Oman by the United Arab Emirates. The peninsula features stunning coastline, jagged cliffs, quaint villages and spectacular scenic roads.
Quality accommodations can easily be found in Oman’s larger cities, as can excellent restaurants and charming cafes.
Direct flights are available on major carriers between Muscat International Airport and European capitals and other major cities. Shuttle services into Muscat from the airport are regular and reliable.
