There is much to see by car in the areas surrounding Omaha. Nearby Agate Fossil Beds National Monument was once part of a working cattle ranch owned by a friend of the Native American Indians, Captain James Cook. This monument now features numerous quarries filled with well preserved 20-million-year-old mammalian fossils.
Up river from Omaha is the Missouri National Recreation River area, which is one of the last places in the world where it is possible to be undisturbed in a canoe on a great river. It is also a great place for fishing, bird-watching and boating.
Along the Missouri River, the DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge, north of Omaha, is an important migratory stop for geese and ducks. It's a great place to spot thousands of waterfowl during October and November especially. The exhibits at the visitors' centre contain thousands of artefacts recovered from the wreck of the sternwheeler Bertrand.
Off I-80 near Mahoney State Park, between Omaha and Lincoln, is the Strategic Air & Space Museum, boasting almost three dozen aircraft, many of which have been restored, including a WWII bomber. The museum also hosts travelling exhibits of airplane memorabilia and art.
Lincoln, Nebraska, offers small-town ambience with the amenities, attractions and entertainment opportunities of a metropolitan area. The state capital and second-largest city is located only a couple hours drive from Omaha. As the home to the immensely popular University of Nebraska, it is also a student centre, attracting students from all over the Midwest.
The city of Papillion has been rich in its existence since it was founded in 1870, and is a vibrant community nestled quietly south of Omaha. Papillion boasts the lowest crime rate in the state, and the cultural diversity and community spirit make the city a truly a special place for residents and visitors alike. Located in the centre of Sarpy county, Papillion lies 20 minutes from I-80 and I-29, and is a short 25-minute trip from Omaha's Eppley Airport.
