Car Hire Oldham - Mini guide to Oldham

Located about seven miles northeast of the city of Manchester, and about five miles south- southeast of Rochdale, Oldham is one of the many towns in England. It occupies about twenty six square miles of land with a population of over 100,000 Oldhamers, making it a large and well populated town. This town is also known as the administrative centre of the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham. It earned its fame and name after the industrial revolution in the 19th century. A visit to this town can be made easier by taking one of the cars available with the car hire services.

Being one of the first towns to be industrialized, it rapidly became the most important centres of cotton and textile. At the peak of its time, it was called as the most productive cotton spinning mill town in the world employing thousands of worker everyday. Car hire services can be used to rent cars if buses or other public transport are not readily available.

In support for the textile industry power and energy were needed in large amounts for transport purposes, this energy need was supplied by the coal mining industry in Oldham itself. Though Coal mining was present since the 16th century, it was brought to light thanks to the large growth in the textile industry. The mines were largely present around Hollinwood and Werneth at the southwest of the town. These coal mines produced enough coal for the rapid development of the boomtown. These mines can be visited by hiring a vehicle from one of the many car hire services to reach here.

However the demand for textile in Oldham reduced and the town was in economic depression. This led to the closure of many industries and textile mills, thus the industrial powerhouse began to fall during the mid-20th century. Finally its last mill was closed in 1998. Thus this once industrial town has now converted into a residential town encouraging further studies and performance of various arts in its fine theatres. Vacationing here can be made simpler by using one of the many car hire services on offer.
