The history-rich city of Oldenburg is an independent city located in Lower Saxony. In 1773 when the Danish rule came to an end, it was then that all the destroyed buildings dotting the city's landscape were re-built in a more German style. In 1945 shortly after the Second World War, Oldenburg re-grew in population to over 100,000 people when lots of refugees migrated to the city. The following year, Oldenburg became a part of Lower Saxony. The city centre is surrounded by highways which make navigating around a lot easier and there are also railway connections that link to nearby cities. Oldenburg is linked to shipping routes that aid the movement of many million tons of goods every year. Bicycles abound in Oldenburg and play a very important role in private transport. Oldenburg enjoys close proximity to Bremen and is only thirty minutes from the airport.
