The Gothic Convent of Saint Denis, founded by King Dinis in 1295, is the city's most well known attraction. Although it sustained a great deal of damage in the Lisbon earthquake of 1755, the apse has survived, as have the tombs of King Dinis and his daughter, the Princess Maria Alfonso. The building features restorations made over the years in Manueline and baroque styles.
Other sights of interest include the 14th century Odivelas Memorial, which bears the Portuguese coat of arms. The city's Águas Livres Aqueduct was constructed by King John V and is an impressive feat of 18th century engineering. The city's fabulous beach district also offers a wide variety of water sports, including surfing and deep sea fishing.
One of Portugal's most prized shopping destinations, the city of Odivelas overflows with shops carrying a large selection of local handicrafts, metal works, porcelain and ceramic items. The region specialises in leather products, beautifully crafted copper goods, glass works, and hand-woven fabrics.
