Monte Alban and Mitla, two of Mexico's primary archaeological sites, are near Oaxaca. Neighbouring villages also have rich archaeological zones, architecture from colonial times, community museums and handicrafts.
Farther afield, Acapulco is known as the 'Pearl of the Pacific', and is one of the most glamorous destinations in Mexico, attracting a diverse crowd of celebrities, honeymooners and travellers looking for amazing beaches, jungles and a fantastic nightlife.
Some of the most beautiful beaches can be found along the Bahia de Acapulco, which forms an arc of miles of powdery sand. Acapulco's most famous attraction is the world-famous cliff divers at La Quebrada (The Break). Divers plunge off cliffs 40 metres high into a cove that is only safe to dive when the waves come in.
Puebla is one of Mexico's oldest Spanish cities, founded in 1531. It is renowned for its distinctive colonial architecture, delicious cuisine, Talavera ceramics, onyx crafts and textile industry. In 1987, UNESCO designated Puebla a World Heritage city.
Major archaeological sites in the region include Texcal Cave near Lake Valsequillo, first occupied by humans around 7,000 BC; the Tenapa Pyramid in Cholula, dating from 400 BC to 200 AD; and, in the neighbouring state of Tlaxcala, the polychrome murals at the fortress of Cacaxtla (600 to 1100 AD).
Nestled on the Gulf of Mexico, Veracruz is a good place to go for Caribbean atmosphere, colonial architecture and savoury seafood. The zocalo, or main square, is one of the most animated and raucous in the country. Attractions include the historic forts of San Juan de Ulua and Baluarte de Santiago, a naval museum and an impressive aquarium.
