Nykoping is a modern Swedish coastal town with a long history. Situated just south of the capital Stockholm, Nykoping is a natural setting for a wide range of activities, historical and cultural, to suit every taste and interest.
Nyköping boasts many fine old churches. St Nicholas Church is particularly renowned for its long ecclesiastical history and its impressive vaults, wooden statues and altarpieces. Another popular attraction is Sweden's longest civic museum, situated along the banks of the town’s river. Nyköping's history through the centuries is narrated along its walls.
Wandering the town is similarly rewarding, and the centre is easily negotiable on foot. The town centre spreads back from the waterfront - the heart of the commercial sector. Storgatan High Street is the focal point of the quay’s downtown and houses many shops and restaurants.
Leisure time can be filled with many activities. The quay area is home to many of the town’s restaurants and bars, and the old brewery by the river has been renovated to accommodate the works of the region’s many skilled potters, gold and silversmith craftsmen. The central Sports and Fair Centre also offers ice-skating and hosts concerts throughout the year.
The surrounding region of Södermanland has much to offer, and Nyköping's archipelagos are considered to be Sweden’s most beautiful. The visitor can explore the coast by boat or walk the series of rope-bridges linking island to island. Other activities on offer include rock-climbing and Icelandic pony riding. Golf is the favourite pastime of many locals and Ärila and Jönåker courses are both popular with visitors and locals alike.
For those arriving by air, Stockholm’s Skavsta Airport receives regular flights from all major European destinations, as Scandinavia’s new Ryanair hub. Bus number 715 commutes hourly between the airport and Nyköping. Nyköping is also regularly serviced by 25 trains daily from Stockholm (duration: one hour) and other major Swedish towns.
