Located in Californias Marin County to the north of San Francisco, Novato has a rural atmosphere, with a lot of open spaces and parks in and near the city offering a host of activities.
The major attractions are the parks, and the city is home to 27 of them. The main ones are: Stafford Lake, famed for its fishing and picnic areas; Miwok, a large, shady park built around the Marin Museum of the American Indian; and the Olompali State Historic Park, which overlooks the Petaluma River from the slopes of majestic Mount Burdell.
Discover the charms of Novatos old town, which features tree-lined streets and historic buildings. Grand Avenue is the focal point where you will find some great shops and stores. The Novato History Museum, housed in a unique 19th century building, is nearby. Additionally, the Marin Museum of the American Indian houses a gallery focused on the Coastal Miwok and Pomo Indian cultures.
The town has a staggering number of eateries to suit all palates, including Asian, Italian and Mexican restaurants. Major community events include: the Novato Festival of Art, Wine and Music (in June); the annual 4th of July Parade in downtown Novato; and the city's Labour Day picnic at Stafford Lake.
Muir Woods is only a short drive away and boasts a fabulous display of giant redwood trees and excellent hiking trails. The Napa Valley lies to the east and is renowned for its fine wines and beautiful countryside. Laid-back San Francisco is a must-see for its principal attractions, including: Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz, Chinatown and Golden Gate Park.
If you are coming by car from San Francisco, head north on highway 101 for approximately 47kms. The nearest main airport is San Francisco International; from here, several shuttle bus companies operate to Novato. Taxis are also readily available.
