Car Hire in Nova Scotia - Getting to Nova Scotia

Halifax International Airport is the main gateway to Nova Scotia with regular services to Montreal, Toronto and St John's, as well as New York city, Boston and several other US cities. Air Canada also flies directly from here to the UK, Germany and France. The airport is 39kms from the centre of town on Hwy 102, north towards Truro.

Bus services run from the Acadian bus station located at 6040 Almon St (northwest of the Citadel, south of Robie St), with several lines running through the Annapolis Valley and south down to Yarmouth. There are also connections to New Brunswick, Cape Breton, Nortumberland Shore and Prince Edward Island (via Moncton). For further destinations, a daily bus leaves Halifax at 7am for Montreal and a weekend bus connects to New York.

The VIA train station is six blocks south of the downtown area. Trains to Montreal depart daily (except Tuesday) through eastern New Brunswick.

The Princess of Acadia ferry from Saint John to Digby is a popular alternative to driving around the many bays of this coastline and they sail three times a day. There are several high-speed catamaran services that also ply the coastline, subject to season and weather, reaching as far as Portland in Maine.

There is also a good network of roads making it painless to drive east from Halifax to Montreal and Quebec City, however roads along the jagged coastline can be tiresome but the scenery is rewarding.
