Almost the entire southern edge of New Brunswick is covered by the beautiful Bay of Fundy, home to the world's highest tides. The bay is dotted with the peaceful Fundy Isles, and also includes a wooded cluster of lobster wharves, whales and Old Sow, the world's second-largest natural tidal whirlpool. Grand Manan Island, the largest of the Fundies, has spectacular coastal topography, excellent bird watching, fine hiking trails and sandy beaches. Campobello Island is a tranquil summer getaway for wealthy New Englanders.
The excellent Gaspésie Park, located on the Gaspé Peninsula north of New Brunswick is a huge, rugged and undeveloped area of lakes and backwoods, with good fishing and hiking.
If youre hoping to escape into some of Canadas renowned wilderness areas, the Chic Choc Mountains has the highest peak in the area - Mont Jacques Cartier and is excellent for hiking and camping, with fantastic views and occasional wildlife. Other climbs include rigorous Mont Albert and lakeside Mont Xalibu.
Notable for its quaint size as capital of the tiny Prince Edward Island (territory), Charlottetown is famous as the birthplace of Canadian confederation. The atmosphere is delightfully colonia,l with its tree-lined Victorian streets, and the oldest part of town is clustered around the waterfront area, featuring the usual renovated buildings and recreation dollar-chasing facilities.
