Nottingham is the capital of the English East Midlands and is situated almost exactly in the centre of England. It is famous for both Robin Hood and Luddite riots, the former bolstered recently by Kevin Costner in the 90s hollywood blockbuster film. It is located within easy driving distance of the beautiful undulating hills of the Peak District.
This popular tourist spot had a strong textiles industry throughout its history. A local tribute to this dwindling local industry can be seen at the Costume and Textiles Museum and the Lace Centre housed in the timber framed Severn.
Nottingham has many parks, squares and places to stop and relax, including the Arboretum Park, which houses an aviary and duck pond. It is a fairly small city centre, yet manages to convey the impression of being spacious, with its many paved pedestrianised areas and three shopping centres. The Market Square, a large open area in the middle of the city, adds to this impression, and is notable for its huge, domed, City Town House building and clock tower at one end.
Nottingham Castle, situated in the area known as the Old City, was originally built in the 17th century on the site of William the Conqueror's older castle. Housing many famous paintings of Nottingham by Sandby, Rosetti, Picasso and Turner, to name a few. The Tales of Robin Hood multi-media museum is a great for the kids too.
Anyone with even a passing interest in beer and history should find the Trip to Jerusalem a tantalising prospect. Reckoned to be The oldest inn in England, it was reputedly founded in 1199 for crusaders en-route to Jerusalem.
