Car Hire in Nîmes - Getting to Nîmes
Nîmes is located in the province of Languedoc-Roussillon in the deep south of France, north of the Mediterranean coastline. The city has a minor airport on the outskirts of the city which is only suitable for light aircraft. However, nearby Montpellier Airport receives traffic from all over Europe with daily flights from Londons Stansted on the budget airline, Ryanair.
There is an airport shuttle bus that runs to and from Montpellier city centre every hour. Taxis are also available and are reasonably priced. Trains to Nîmes leave from the main train station in the city centre every 10 to 15 minutes, taking a modest 30 minutes.
If youre driving yourself and coming from Spain, follow the Spanish A7 to the French border and get on the A9 which runs through Perpignan, Narbonne and Montpellier before reaching Nîmes. From Paris, take the A6 (Paris-Lyon) motorway, connecting with the A7 (Lyon-Avignon) motorway. From Avignon, head southwest on the A9 to Nîmes; the travelling distance is just over 700kms.
Trains from Paris leave from the Gare de Lyon, south of the city centre, every hour or two and take between three and four hours to reach Nîmes. The three-hour train is direct, while the latter connects with another Nîmes-bound train from Lyon.
From Marseilles St Charles station, there is roughly one train every hour. The trip to Nîmes takes an hour (or three hours via Avignon). Up to five trains an hour go from Montpellier, taking 30 minutes. The bus station, gare Routière, is just behind the railway station on the rue Ste-Félicité.
