Car Rental Nîmes - Exploring Nîmes
Nîmes is close to some of Frances most visited towns and cities, including nearby Avignon and Montpellier. Driving here is simple, with the major A9 trunk road taking the bulk of traffic away from the minor roads. The terrain is extremely varied, with the coast and Gulf of Lion to the south and the Cévennes hills to the north.
The grand and well-fortified town of Avignon lies to the northeast of Nîmes, and is famous for its summer festival of music and drama, as well as fine dining. The great Palais des Papes, a fortress of 10 towers and battlements with fine tapestries and frescoes, is the principal attraction. Also of note are the Museum of Medieval Painting and Sculpture, and the famous Pont d'Avignon.
In the other direction along the A9 is the lively southern city of Montpellier, bursting with history from Roman times. Much of the city dates from the 17th century, with elegant mansions and secluded courtyards. City life revolves around the place de la Comédie, with its morning market and bustling cafés. The old town is largely a pedestrian zone and therefore ideal for strolling.
The grand Promenade de Peyrou leads to the Château d'Eau and the aqueduct which once served the city; from here, there is a good view of the city framed by sea and mountains. To the south are the beaches of the Mediterranean; those who prefer solitude can make their way along the coastal road to one of the many isolated beaches.
The town of Arles, with its many Roman remains, terracotta roofs and ochre walls, is typical of Provençe. The rich history, vibrant art, many fine museums and excellent restaurants all make Arles well worth a visit. Additionally, there is a panoramic view from the well-preserved Roman arena where bullfights are held during the summer.
The Museum of Arles, devoted to Provençal traditions, is also worth a look. Les Alyscamps, just outside Arles, is a burial ground containing tombs and sarcophagi. Alternatively, the nearby Camargue Regional National Park is a beautiful area full of flamingos, wild ducks and large herds of bulls and horses.
