Mini guide to Nicosia

Cyprus’s capital suffers the same syndrome as Berlin did, split by an ugly ‘green line’, effectively dividing the city into two since Turkey invaded Cyprus in 1974. However is doesn’t detract from the magnificent history that both sides offer, and tourists are free to cross on day trips.

Located in the south, the old town is surrounded by 16th-century Venetian walls and is the most interesting part of the city. The Leventis Municipal museum traces the development of the city from prehistoric times and gives a pretty good overview of the Island’s fascinating history, dominated by Mycenaeans, Phoenicians, Egyptians, Assyrians, Persians, Byzantiums and even the Knights Templer. The Dragoman Hadzigeorgakis is another museum housed in a gorgeous 15th-century mansion. Just east of the Leventis you'll find the museum of culture. For some really spectacular museum pieces try the Byzantine museum which has a superb collection of religious icons and mosaics.

Once the main entrance to the city, the Famagusta Gate, on the eastern wall, is beautifully preserved and is now used as a cultural centre. Just outside the city walls is the city centre and municipal gardens, where the modern town and tourist facilities, along with restaurants and bars, are located.

Atatürk Square is the centre of the North, and nearby is the well-preserved Kyrenia Gate. The Turkish museum, inside a 17th-century monastery, is worthwhile and the 13th century Selimiye mosque is one of the finest examples of gothic architecture the country. Another popular place is the Büyük Hammam, the city's largest Turkish baths.

The north coast is the closest to Lefkosia, and there is a resort at Kyrenia, featuring good tourist facilities and a castle. But most visitors limit their holiday to the south and head for the great resorts of Lanarca, Limmasol, Ayia Napa and Pafos. The mountains of the Troödos region, with a number of incredible monasteries, are easily reachable from Lefkosia, and provide a rewarding day trip.
