Car Rental Niagra Falls - Exploring Niagra Falls
Beyond Niagara are several interesting places to visit. Two hours drive away is the cosmopolitan city of Toronto and over the border is upstate New York.
The Niagara Gorge extends from the Falls (for 11 kilometres downstream) to the foot of the escarpment at Queenston. Its possible to follow the gorge and there are several viewpoints along the way.
The Niagara peninsula sits at the same latitude as northern California and the south of Burgundy, France, making it a perfect wine-growing area. The area is known for its late-harvest and ice wines (sweet and fruity). A wine country drive - self-drive or organized - makes a great day trip allowing you to taste the wines as well as seeing some beautiful countryside.
Originally constructed in 1829 to link Lake Erie with Lake Ontario and offer ships a safe detour around Niagara Falls, the Welland Canal has a long and colourful history. Simply passing time watching enormous ships pass through the giant locks is fascinating.
Within two hours is Toronto - the countrys principal city, featuring a multi-cultural, lively and cosmopolitan atmosphere. It boasts the worlds tallest structure (CN tower), and plenty of bars and restaurants. The renovated Harbor front is a fine place for an outdoor dining and drinking. Some of Toronto's best-preserved historic buildings can be found in York old town, and there's a peerless collection of fine Victorian domestic architecture in Cabbagetown.
