Car Rentals New Zealand - Weather in New Zealand
New Zealand is the worlds only country that has every climatic condition. Lying in the 'roaring forties' latitude, it is largely windy across all regions, especially with wind funneling through the Cook straight, buffeting Wellington.
The Southern Alps shield the South Islands east coast from the rains of Tasman sea, resulting in a much drier climate than the west coast. On the North island, rainfall is more evenly distributed. Regardless the entire island can be pretty wet at times resulting in lush country side and pretty lakes everywhere. Barren pockets around McKenzie coutry on the south island are however desert-like.
Being so far south temperatures drop to freezing in winter, mainly on the high ground, with plenty of snow in parts, but summers are hot, dry and agreeable, with November to April being the best time to visit. The Northern regions of both islands have the best vacation weather.
Because the islands are so thoroughly surrounded by ocean, weather conditions can change dramatically and rapidly with severe consequences. Skiing is popular in winter and conditions are good. In summer, December is the busiest month for travel and vacation.
