Car Rental New Zealand - Exploring New Zealand
Both the North and South Island boast spectacular natural scenery including towering fjordlands, volcanic moonscapes, pristine forests and unspoilt bays. Not surprisingly the most popular way of exploring New Zealand is by hiring a camper can.
North of Auckland is the beautiful Bay of Islands including historic Waitangi and Russell, as well as the peacefully remote Ninety Mile beach and awesome Kauri forests, further north. The Coromandel, covered in verdant forest and blessed with fantastic private beaches, is east of Auckland and many head for Whitianga and its nearby attractions.
Rotorua is New Zealands busiest tourist spot. Situated among several pretty lakes formed by volcanic action, it mingles bizarre geysers and volcanic landscapes with intriguing Maori culture.
Lake Taupo sits in the centre of the North island and is a good launching point for trout fishing, endless adrenalin inducing activities and the spectacular Tongariro crossing - New Zealands finest one-day hike (into a collapsed volcanic crater).
Across the Cook Strait, the Marborough sound is unbelievably beautiful, as is the nearby Abel Tasman park and Golden bay.
The drive down the remote west coast is a popular way to reach the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers, nestled below Mount Cook and the Southern Alps.
Queenstown is the adventure capital of New Zealand and opportunities for adrenalin junkies are endless. Moody lake Wakitipu, and the snow-capped Remarkables range beyond are a postcard perfect backdrop to this lively tourist town. Nearby Arrowtown and Wanaka are also popular. Its a few hours drive from here to Fiordland National Park, a wilderness of breathtaking mountains, ice and beech forests, and the gob smacking Milford Sound.
The lovely Caitlins national park makes the drive to the Otago Peninsula worthwhile. The odd former French settlement of Akaroa, near Christchurch, is also worth the excursion.
